Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

1st in the league at suppressing chances, 206 goals against, a .9211 goaltender — and a fourth consecutive first-round elimination by the same club.

Who this names 7 of 22 on the roster · 38% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Cody Ceci, Drew Doughty, Brian Dumoulin, Joel Edmundson, Kevin Fiala, Warren Foegele, Anton Forsberg, Samuel Helenius, Adrian Kempe, Darcy Kuemper, Andrei Kuzmenko, Alex Laferriere, Trevor Moore, Jacob Moverare, Alex Turcotte.

What the Quant Says

105 points, 1st in the league at preventing chances, 7th on the penalty kill, and a fourth consecutive first-round elimination by Edmonton.

The team is genuinely good and the shape of it is unusual: 5th in shot-attempt share, 3rd in chance share, 11th at creating chances, 1st at preventing them. They win by conceding nothing. 206 goals against is the second-fewest in the league and it is a structure rather than a goaltender — though a .9211 helps.

What the record does not contain is a player who can decide a series. The scoring is spread across seven forwards and the best of them is a 73-point winger; the best defenceman is 35 and played 30 games. Four Aprils against the same heavier opponent have produced the same answer four times, and the summer's response was Corey Perry at 40 and Joel Armia at 32 — a direct attempt to be more difficult to play against, and not an attempt to be more dangerous.

What the Scout Says

The most disciplined team in the league, built to concede nothing, and short of anybody who can win a game by himself.

Anze Kopitar took 4 penalty minutes across 81 games at 37 while playing the hardest matchup minutes on the club — he is a beat ahead of everybody and protects the puck below the goal line with a stick and a body nobody gets past. Mikey Anderson defends far heavier than 195 pounds, boxing out in front and blocking shots, and took 28 penalty minutes at 23 minutes a night. Phillip Danault wins pucks back in the neutral zone and moves them immediately, and his 8 goals on 123 shots is the point rather than the problem.

The two who could change the ceiling are young. Quinton Byfield is 6-5 and 230 and among the faster forwards in the league in a straight line without losing the puck doing it. Brandt Clarke walks the line and delivers a seam pass through traffic rather than around it, at 22, in sixteen minutes a night.

How they were used

2024-25 · 79 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
