Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

Goaltending goals prevented beyond what the chances allowed were worth
-9.5 23rd of 32

Los Angeles Kings got 9.5 fewer saves than the chances they faced warranted — 10 goals of the record that the underlying play does not explain, and it regresses.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Second in the league at suppressing chances at even strength, and twenty-third in both finishing and goaltending — the two departments a club cannot coach.

Who this names 8 of 21 on the roster · 36% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Mikey Anderson, Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Viktor Arvidsson, Quinton Byfield, Phillip Danault, Andreas Englund, Kevin Fiala, Carl Grundstrom, Arthur Kaliyev, Trevor Lewis, Blake Lizotte, Trevor Moore, Matt Roy.

What the Quant Says

47-25-10, 104 points, 10th in the league and third in the Pacific.

280 goals for, 9th. 257 against, 16th. Second in the league at suppressing chances at even strength, 6th in shot-attempt share, 6th in chance share, 12th on the penalty kill and 16th on the power play.

At five-on-five: 169 goals scored against 172.1 expected, and 159 conceded against 149.5. The finishing was 23rd at minus-3.1 and the goaltending 23rd at minus-9.5. Twelve and a half goals lost in the two departments that do not answer to structure, on a club that was second in the league in the department that does.

Los Angeles lost the first round to Edmonton in six.

Drew Doughty played 26:14 a night at 33, the largest figure of any skater in the league who played seventy games. Anze Kopitar had 74 points and 4 penalty minutes at 36. Adrian Kempe scored 41 goals. Pheonix Copley won 24 games on a .9029.

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Vladislav Gavrikov, Cam Talbot and David Rittich arrive. Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari, Sean Durzi, Sean Walker, Jonathan Quick, Joonas Korpisalo and Calvin Petersen do not.

The structure is the best in the Western Conference and the crease has been the problem for three seasons. Los Angeles spent this summer trading three forwards and a defenceman for a 25-year-old centre and signing two goaltenders in their thirties with career figures around .910. One of those decisions is a lot more convincing than the other.

What the Scout Says

The second-best defensive structure in hockey, and four goaltenders who played it away.

Los Angeles allowed 2.366 expected goals per 60 at even strength, second in the league. Its goaltending came in 9.5 goals worse than the chances it faced, 23rd. Drew Doughty played 26:14 a night at 33 and Anze Kopitar 20:18 at 36 on 4 penalty minutes.

This is a heavy, deliberate, slow, extremely well-organised club with two thirty-somethings running it and a genuine centre depth chart behind them. Everything it has failed to do has happened in the crease.

How they were used

2022-23 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
