50.6 per cent at five-on-five, the 59th percentile — the second-lowest among the club’s defencemen. His on-ice goals were 61-31 against an expected 50.6-49.4, which is 10 goals of finishing above expectation and 18 of goaltending. The plus-25 is almost entirely borrowed.
The Finesse Game
Very little. 91 shots with 88 per cent of them from beyond 40 feet and 3 per cent from inside 20 — the second-most perimeter shot chart in this edition — and a first pass that goes to the boards.
14 assists at 20 minutes a night is a low return. He is not asked to make plays.
The Physical Game
6-5 and 220, and this is the entire case. He clears his crease, hits hard, and is genuinely difficult to get past in front of the net.
22 penalty minutes over 73 games is disciplined for the size. The durability has been reasonable after several interrupted seasons.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, six organisations, a Cup in St. Louis, and a career as a heavy defensive defenceman.
At 32 the projection is a third-pair defenceman who plays 20 minutes on a club with nobody else who can do the job. The plus-25 should be discounted by roughly 25.
