This Season So Far

The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

19 goals and 11 assists in 81 games for 30 points, plus-12, on 11:56 a night with Edmonton.

19 per cent shooting on 100 shots at 40 years old. 19 goals in twelve minutes a night is an extraordinary rate and it is the fourth consecutive season in which he has produced more than the role should allow.

The Finesse Game

Everything happens within fifteen feet of the net. He deflects, he collects, he finds the seam in a box, and the hands in tight are still among the better ones in the league for that specific job.

100 shots in 81 games is very low volume and 11 assists says he creates nothing. The entire offensive contribution is standing in a place nobody wants to stand and being ready.

The Physical Game

6-3 and 210, and the physical game is the last thing that will leave. He cross-checks, he agitates, he takes punishment in the crease and gives it back, and he remains one of the most genuinely disliked opponents in hockey.

61 penalty minutes over 81 games at 40. The skating went a decade ago and none of the value ever depended on it.

The Intangibles

Twenty seasons, a Hart, a Cup, and five appearances in a final with four different clubs in six years. That is not a coincidence and nobody has satisfactorily explained it.

At 40 the projection is 12 goals and an April in which he is more useful than in the 82 games before it. Los Angeles has been eliminated in the first round four years running by a heavier team; this is a direct response.

The two rank him within 11 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 357 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 78 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Usual linemates

2024-25 with EDM · 815 minutes at five-on-five

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.

Why the numbers land there

Five-on-five, 2024-25

The club
EDM took 54.3% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 51.7% — 2.6 below the club he did it on.
The role
Fourth line, 815 minutes at five-on-five — 38th percentile in ice time.

Brett Kulak56.3%49.0%53.9%
Evan Bouchard54.7%50.5%59.1%

50.5% together, 52.5% for him apart and 54.3% for Nurse apart. Nurse was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.

Where he shoots from

goal on goal missed

148 unblocked shots in 2024-25, 18 of them goals. His median goal came from 9 feet. 57% of his shots came from inside twenty feet, 14% from beyond forty.
