The read
the numbers, and the eye2nd in the league at creating chances, 1st on the penalty kill, 30th in finishing and 24th in goaltending — and a 31-goal gap between what this team earned at five-on-five and what it got.
Who this names 6 of 23 on the roster · 31% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Ty Emberson, Trent Frederic, Adam Henrique, Connor Ingram, Mattias Janmark, Max Jones, Kasperi Kapanen, Brett Kulak, Curtis Lazar, Andrew Mangiapane, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse, Calvin Pickard, Vasily Podkolzin, Jack Roslovic, Troy Stecher, Jake Walman.
What the Quant Says
101 points, a second consecutive Cup final, a second consecutive defeat, and the largest gap in this edition between what a team earned and what it received.
4th in shot-attempt share. 2nd in creating chances. 14th at preventing them. 1st on the penalty kill. And 30th in finishing and 24th in goaltending — a club outplaying the league at five-on-five that was outscored at five-on-five, by 31 goals against expectation.
The three men at the centre of it all had the same season: McDavid's line minus-13 on an expected plus-21. Hyman's minus-15 on an expected plus-21. Bouchard's minus-11 on an expected plus-22. None of that repeats. A club with these underlying numbers and a league-average crease wins 115 points.
Which is the point. Edmonton does not need to be better at hockey. It needs a goaltender, and it has spent two summers deciding it does not.
What the Scout Says
The best player in the world, the most complete offensive forward behind him, the highest chance share of any skater in the league, and a crease that has now decided two finals.
Connor McDavid changes direction at full pace without losing any of it, which means a defenceman who commits is beaten and one who does not is walked around — and 50 per cent of his shots come from inside 20 feet against game plans built entirely to prevent exactly that. Leon Draisaitl is the opposite kind of problem: not fast, and built on strength, hands and anticipation, which is a set of skills that ages far better than speed.
Zach Hyman takes 69 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet at a median of 12 and posted the highest chance share of any skater in the NHL. Evan Bouchard has the best point shot in the league and is genuinely below average at defending a rush. Mattias Ekholm at 34 beats a forecheck by himself with almost no error rate. Stuart Skinner is 6-4 and gets beaten across the slot.
The roster
No measured season behind three of them: Connor Ingram, Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2024-25.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
