Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The best chance-creating club in hockey and the 30th-best finishing — the four highest five-on-five chance shares in this edition all belong to Edmonton, and it was worth 104 points.

Who this names 10 of 20 on the roster · 63% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Connor Brown, Joshua Brown, Travis Dermott, Ty Emberson, Adam Henrique, Mattias Janmark, Brett Kulak, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Calvin Pickard, Stuart Skinner.

What the Quant Says

49-27-6 and 104 points, ninth in the league. First in chance share at five-on-five, third in shot attempts, first in expected goals per 60 at even strength, second on the power play, sixth on the penalty kill. Tenth-best goaltending. Thirtieth-best finishing.

Every number on this club is elite except the one that decides games, and the one that decides games is the one that moves most from year to year. A club that creates 214.0 expected goals at five-on-five and scores 193 is not badly built. It is unlucky, and unluck is not a plan but it is also not a flaw.

The interesting thing is where the shortfall sat. McDavid and Hyman finished above expectation. Draisaitl finished level. Bouchard and Ekholm finished level. The first line and the first pair did exactly what their play deserved. The bottom six and the second pair lost the club something like two goals a week for a season, and three of the six men whose ice finished furthest below the chances left in the summer.

Jeff Skinner arrives from Buffalo at 32 with 357 career goals in 1,006 games, a career plus-minus of minus-130, and 24 goals in 74 games last season on a 48.8 per cent chance share. He has never played a playoff game. Putting him beside McDavid or Draisaitl is the cheapest possible answer to a finishing problem, and it might work, because almost anything put beside McDavid works.

Connor McDavid is 27, Leon Draisaitl 28, Zach Hyman 32, Mattias Ekholm 34 and Evan Bouchard 24. The window is open and the roster underneath the top five is thinner than it was a year ago. This club does not need to create more chances than anyone in hockey again. It has done that twice. It needs the fourth line to score once in a while.

What the Scout Says

A 39-year-old with 1,426 penalty minutes, two 6-5 defencemen, and the best passer in the world.

Corey Perry is 39 and has 1,426 career penalty minutes in 1,311 games — the second-most in this edition, six behind Tom Wilson. He is the fourth-oldest player in the book. At 6-3 and 210 he still goes to the front of the net and still says something on the way past.

Mattias Ekholm is 6-5 and 225 and Josh Brown 6-5 and 220. Darnell Nurse is 6-4 and 215 with 549 career penalty minutes. That is the size, and it is all on the blue line.

Derek Ryan is 5-10 and 185 at 37 and undrafted. Troy Stecher is 5-10 and 184 and undrafted. Two of the three smallest men on the roster arrived without being picked at all.

Connor McDavid is 6-1 and 194 and took 30 penalty minutes in 76 games. The best player in the world is neither big nor mean and does not need to be.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
