14 goals and 14 assists in 81 games for 28 points, even, on 13:02 a night with Washington, including a shorthanded goal.
95 shots in 81 games is a low volume and 14.7 per cent conversion is above his career rate. 28 points on the best regular-season club in the league is a bottom-six return.
The Finesse Game
Better hands than the recent numbers suggest and a release that used to be a genuine weapon. The 35-goal season in Calgary was four years ago and everything since has been in the 30-40 point range.
What remains is a winger who protects the puck well below the goal line and can make a play at moderate speed. The volume is the problem — 95 shots in a full season is not enough to score.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 183, and he plays hard for the size. He forechecks with real force, goes into corners against defencemen, and does not get discouraged.
24 penalty minutes over 81 games. The durability has been excellent — four consecutive full seasons.
The Intangibles
A sixth-round pick who became a 35-goal scorer and then stopped, across three organisations.
At 29 the projection is a third-line winger who forechecks and scores 15. Edmonton is buying the possibility that a man who has spent three years in defensive roles on defensive clubs looks different beside a 100-point centre. That is a reasonable bet at the price.
