Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The best power play in the league by a distance, the 30th-best penalty kill, and a captain whose chance share is higher without every single team-mate.

Who this names 14 of 24 on the roster · 62% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Tyson Barrie, Tyler Benson, Philip Broberg, Cody Ceci, Warren Foegele, Markus Niemelainen, Darnell Nurse, Devin Shore, Stuart Skinner, Kailer Yamamoto.

What the Quant Says

49-27-6, 104 points, 11th in the league and second in the Pacific. Edmonton reached the Western Conference final and was swept in it.

290 goals for, 7th. 252 against, 16th. 9th in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 52.5 per cent and 13th in chance share at 51.3. 9th at creating chances at even strength and 20th at suppressing them.

At five-on-five: 181 goals scored against 178.3 expected, and 173 conceded against 169.6. The finishing was 17th at plus-2.7 and the goaltending 17th at minus-3.4. Almost nothing about the season was luck in either direction; this was a very good attacking club with an ordinary crease and a bad penalty kill.

Connor McDavid had 123 points and the highest penalty differential of all 393 qualified forwards. Leon Draisaitl had 110 and 55 goals at 19.8 per cent. Evan Bouchard had 43 points in his first full season with the 5th-most shots per 60 of any qualified defenceman. Jesse Puljujarvi had the club's best chance share at 58.6 per cent and 36 points.

Across sixteen playoff games McDavid had 33 points, Draisaitl 32, Evander Kane 13 goals and Zach Hyman 11.

Duncan Keith, Kris Russell, Colton Sceviour, Mikko Koskinen and Mike Smith are all off the roster. That is 73 games of goaltending and two of last season's six defencemen.

Jack Campbell arrives from Toronto, Mattias Janmark from Vegas, Ryan Murray from Colorado and Klim Kostin from St Louis. Brett Kulak came from Montreal inside last season.

A conference finalist has replaced its entire crease and two defencemen, and kept the two best forwards in the world at the same address.

What the Scout Says

Two of the best forwards alive, a blue line that got younger, and the two special-teams units at opposite ends of the league.

Connor McDavid is in the top five of the league for both speed and how often he reaches it, and he covers more ground than nine-tenths of the forwards in it. He is fouled more often than any forward in the league because there is no other way to stop him, and he almost never fouls anybody back.

Leon Draisaitl is one of the fastest men in the league and one of the least mobile. He picks his moments and stands still the rest of the time, and the tracking measures both halves of that.

Zach Hyman does not beat goaltenders with the shot; he beats them with where he is standing — the fifth-closest shot chart in the league. Jesse Puljujarvi forechecks and does not defend, and takes a higher share of the chances than anybody on the club. Evander Kane hits and does not defend.

The middle of the ice is where the club is thinnest. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a positional defender rather than a contact one and takes 46 per cent of his points from the man advantage. Ryan McLeod covers more ground than every forward in the league and has the sixth-softest shot in it.

Edmonton will dress two of the three softest shots in the league on the same fourth line — Derek Ryan and Mattias Janmark — and both of them shoot from the slot or not at all.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
