The read
the numbers, and the eyeThree hundred goals against, the second-worst chance suppression in hockey, and goaltending that was exactly neutral — so all three hundred are real. Nine top-ten draft picks in the room.
Who this names 19 of 23 on the roster · 93% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Jet Greaves, Elvis Merzlikins, Damon Severson, Daniil Tarasov.
What the Quant Says
66 points, 27-43-12, and twenty-ninth in the league.
The club was 27th at creating chances at even strength and 31st at suppressing them. It conceded 196 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 195.6, and its goaltending came in 0.4 goals worse than the chances faced. Three hundred goals against, and every one of them earned.
There is one genuinely encouraging number and it should be named. The club finished 9.3 goals above expectation, 8th in the league. A 66-point team that finishes well is a 66-point team whose problem is entirely at the other end.
On the twenty-ninth of August, Johnny Gaudreau died. He was 31, he had led the club in scoring, and he had two seasons of a seven-year contract behind him. Nothing on this page is a response to that and nothing should pretend to be.
What is here is an extraordinary amount of draft capital that has not become a hockey team. Erik Gudbranson was third overall, Jack Johnson third, James van Riemsdyk second, Adam Fantilli third, Kent Johnson fifth, David Jiricek sixth, Sean Monahan sixth, Ivan Provorov seventh and Zach Werenski eighth. Nine top-ten picks on one roster is more than any other club in this edition carries, and the club finished twenty-ninth.
The young end is real. Adam Fantilli is 20 and played 49 games. Cole Sillinger is 21. Kent Johnson is 22. Egor Chinakhov is 23. Kirill Marchenko is 24. Dmitri Voronkov is 24. David Jiricek is 20. That is seven players under 25 already in the lineup, and the argument for this club is that all of them were asked to play too much too soon behind the worst defensive structure in the East.
The summer added age rather than defence. Sean Monahan came from Winnipeg, James van Riemsdyk from Boston, Jack Johnson from Colorado, Jordan Harris from Montreal and Kevin Labanc from San Jose. Alexandre Texier went to St. Louis, Jack Roslovic to Carolina, Emil Bemstrom to Pittsburgh, Jake Bean to Calgary and Adam Boqvist to Florida.
Jack Johnson is 37 and Kevin Labanc took 39.4 per cent of the expected goals last season, the 2nd percentile. A club that was 31st at suppressing chances has not addressed the reason.
What the Scout Says
A 6-5 rookie winger at 234 pounds, a 6-5 defenceman with 839 penalty minutes, and a 5-8 forward who shoots from sixteen.
Dmitri Voronkov is 6-5 and 234 and cannot be moved off the front of the net, and he did it as a 24-year-old rookie. Erik Gudbranson is 6-5 and 222 with 839 penalty minutes in 789 games and is the reason opponents look up on this blue line. Mathieu Olivier is 6-1 and 232 with 239 penalty minutes in 168 games and will fight anybody.
Boone Jenner is 6-2 and 204 and forechecks first with 410 penalty minutes in 715 games. Sean Kuraly is 6-2 and 208 and plays the same way.
The rest of the top nine is small and quick. Justin Danforth is 5-8 and 193. Kent Johnson is 6-0 and 170 and is the lightest forward on this roster. Kevin Labanc is 5-11 and 185.
The blue line is large and slow. Ivan Provorov is 6-1 and 224, Jack Johnson 6-2 and 225, David Jiricek 6-4 and 204. Zach Werenski is 6-2 and 214 and defends with skating rather than force.

How they were used
2023-24 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
