Eighty-three games is the quirk of a mid-season trade. Twelve penalty minutes in eighty-three of them is one of the cleanest rates in this edition.

48.5 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,066 minutes, the 40th percentile. His ice went 48-34 against an expectation of 45.15-48.01 — fourteen fewer goals conceded than the chances predicted.

The Finesse Game

171 attempts at a median of 18 feet, with 53 per cent from inside 20 and 13 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 15.2 per cent against a career 14.01 across 1,741 shots.

He shoots from the paint and he has done it for eleven seasons — 244 goals in 764 games, with 76 of them on the power play. The release is quick in tight rather than heavy from range.

33 assists and 294 for his career. He holds the puck below the goal line and waits for the seam, and the hockey sense is what has survived two reconstructed hips.

The Physical Game

6-2 and 206. He forechecks honestly without punishing anybody and he will lose a battle on the wall to a heavy defenceman; the skating has never fully come back.

12 penalty minutes in 83 games and 181 in 764 for his career. He does not retaliate, he does not take liberties, and he is trusted a man short — 2 shorthanded goals last season and 4 for his career.

The Intangibles

Sixth overall in 2013 by Calgary, out of Ottawa in the junior league, and 764 games and 538 points at 30, with two hip surgeries and a knee reconstruction behind him.

He signed here in the summer. A club that finished twenty-ninth and lost its leading scorer has bought a point-a-game centre at thirty who has already had three career-threatening injuries, and on this roster he is immediately the best forward.
