The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe highest rate of expected goals against in the league and the 31st chance share — and then it signed the man who led the NHL in even-strength scoring.
Who this names 7 of 23 on the roster · 32% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Gavin Bayreuther, Jake Bean, Emil Bemstrom, Adam Boqvist, Egor Chinakhov, Brendan Gaunce, Vladislav Gavrikov, Boone Jenner, Joonas Korpisalo, Sean Kuraly, Elvis Merzlikins, Gustav Nyquist, Andrew Peeke, Eric Robinson, Jack Roslovic, Jakub Voracek.
What the Quant Says
37-38-7, 81 points, 21st in the league and 6th in the Metropolitan.
262 goals for, 14th. 300 against, 28th. 22nd in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 47.8 per cent and 31st in chance share at 44.8. 3.080 expected goals against per 60 at even strength is more than any other club in the league gave up.
At five-on-five: 177 goals scored against 158.5 expected, and 214 conceded against 195.3. The finishing was 5th in the league at plus-18.5 and the goaltending 26th at minus-18.7. A club that was outchanged by nearly everybody shot the lights out and could not keep the puck out of its own net.
Patrik Laine scored 26 goals in 56 games off the 2nd-hardest shot among forwards. Zach Werenski played 25:40 a night at the 97th percentile. Cole Sillinger scored 16 goals at eighteen and finished minus-22.
Oliver Bjorkstrand has gone to Seattle, Gabriel Carlsson to Washington, and Dean Kukan and Alexandre Texier are off the roster.
Johnny Gaudreau arrives from Calgary with 115 points and the highest even-strength scoring rate of the 393 qualified forwards, and Erik Gudbranson with him. Jon Gillies arrives as the third goaltender.
A free agent who led the league in even-strength scoring has signed with the club that gave up more expected goals per 60 at even strength than anybody in it. Whether that is a beginning or a category error is the season's question.
What the Scout Says
A hundred-point winger walking into the worst even-strength defence in hockey, a 101.5 mph shot that plays from 36 feet, a nineteen-year-old centre who was thrown in at the deep end, and a blue line where nobody clears the 20th percentile.
Zach Werenski played 25:40 a night and escapes pressure rather than absorbing it. Patrik Laine took 49.7 per cent of the chances with Werenski on the ice and 35.0 without him. Justin Danforth turned 29 as a rookie and posted the lowest giveaway rate of the 393 qualified forwards.
The identity here is unfinished on purpose. The club has drafted well and traded for young defencemen, and it has now bought the best forward available in July at a price nobody else was willing to pay. What it has not done is fix the thing that made it 28th in goals against.
The honest reading is that this roster is two years from the team it is being built into, and it has spent seven of them on a twenty-nine-year-old.
The roster
No measured season behind three of them: Jon Gillies, Joonas Korpisalo and Elvis Merzlikins. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2021-22.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
