Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

2nd in the league in finishing, 22nd in goaltending, and two points short of the playoffs in the season nobody expected them to compete in at all.

Who this names 9 of 23 on the roster · 48% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Egor Chinakhov, Jake Christiansen, Dante Fabbro, Jet Greaves, Kent Johnson, Isac Lundeström, Elvis Merzlikins, Sean Monahan, Ivan Provorov, Mikael Pyyhtia, Damon Severson, Cole Sillinger, Brendan Smith, Miles Wood.

What the Quant Says

89 points, 2 points short of a playoff place, in the season that began with the death of Johnny Gaudreau. That is the context for everything else on this page and it belongs at the top of it.

The numbers say the club overachieved and were unlucky at the same time. 2nd in the league in finishing at 29.4 goals above expectation, and 22nd in goaltending at 9.4 below it — a net gain of 20 goals from the two phases a club controls least, on top of a team that was 21st in shot-attempt share, 17th at creating chances and 26th at preventing them.

What is real: Werenski at 82 points and a workload nobody else in the league carried, Marchenko at 31 goals and improving, Fantilli at 31 goals at 20, Voronkov scoring from the paint, Mateychuk at 21. What is not: a 19.5 per cent shooting rate on the second line, a plus-6 from an 8th-percentile defenceman, and a goaltender with one above-average season in seven.

What the Scout Says

A young, heavy, fast club with a genuinely elite defenceman, no goaltending, and more talent up front than the last five years suggested.

Zach Werenski beats a forecheck by going through the space rather than around it, carries out of his own zone as routine, and walks the line holding the puck until a killer commits — 298 shots and 59 assists is a man doing both halves of the job at 27 minutes a night. Adam Fantilli's stride is genuinely elite and he enters the zone with control rather than chasing, and at 20 he does not yet control a shift.

What is distinctive about this roster is where it shoots from. Voronkov takes 62 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet, Olivier 56, Boone Jenner 54, Charlie Coyle 52, Aston-Reese 48. This is a club with five forwards who only go to the net, which is a real identity and a real answer to being outplayed at even strength. The crease is where it all stops.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
