This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
27 goals and 75 assists in 81 games for Toronto — 102 points at 21:19 a night, plus-18, with 6 power-play goals, a shorthanded goal and 7 game-winning goals on 173 shots, and 14 penalty minutes.
It is a career high and the fourth time in five seasons he has cleared ninety points. Vegas acquired him in the summer in a sign-and-trade for Nicolas Roy, which for a hundred-point winger is a price no club has paid in a decade.
The Finesse Game
He is one of the two or three best passers in the league. He holds the puck on the half wall until a killing box commits and then puts it through the seam, he throws pucks into space a full second before a teammate reaches it, and 75 assists says how often it arrives.
173 attempts and 27 goals at 15.6 per cent. The shot has always been the fourth thing about him and it is genuinely good; he does not use it enough and never has.
The Physical Game
6-0 and 180 and light. He does not forecheck with force and he does not win pucks against defencemen on the wall.
14 penalty minutes in 81 games. What he does do that most players his size do not is defend: he is among the better stick-checking forwards in the league, he kills penalties, and he takes the puck rather than the man.
The Intangibles
Fourth overall in 2015 and 657 games and 741 points, nine seasons of it in one city under a level of scrutiny very few players in the sport experience.
He is 28. He has 102 points and thirteen playoff series behind him and almost none of them ended well, and that is the file the entire hockey world will be reading this spring.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 8 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 637 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 83 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2024-25
- The club
- TOR took 50.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 54.4% — 4.2 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Second line, 1,138 minutes at five-on-five — 80th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auston Matthews | 58.0% | 46.2% | 46.9% |
| Matthew Knies | 56.0% | 51.9% | 48.3% |
| Oliver Ekman-Larsson | 49.3% | 57.7% | 50.8% |
58.0% together, 46.2% for him apart and 46.9% for Matthews apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
