25 assists is what remains and it is real. He escapes the first forechecker by turning away from it, he moves the puck early, and the transition game is the reason he is on a second pairing at 34.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 190 and light for the position. He does not clear the front of his own net by force and he is not a punishing hitter.
52 penalty minutes in 77 games is a high rate for a defenceman who plays this way, and a share of it is the stick foul that follows losing a step at the blue line.
The Intangibles
Sixth overall in 2009 and 1,059 games and 500 points, with a career minus-104 accumulated almost entirely in Arizona on clubs that lost a great deal.
He won a Stanley Cup in Florida in 2024 and signed here that summer at 33. He is 34, and the contract runs three more years.
