Ask the book

2026-27 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2026-27 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

293 goals, the fourth-best finishing in the league, and 51 per cent of the skater points coming from men 33 and older — the highest share of any club in hockey.

The numbers place it 14 spots higher than the book does. Every report underneath was written with these numbers on screen and the book departs from them anyway, which makes the gap a judgment rather than an oversight.

Both bars rank this club among the 32 in the edition. The report bar is the mean of its players' grades, weighted by the five-on-five minutes each of them played; the numbers bar is their expected-goal share on the same weighting. It counts 23 of the 26 reports on this roster — the rest have no five-on-five record long enough to weigh — and it reads the roster as it stands rather than the club's own last season.

Who the words reach 23 of 26 · 94% of the five-on-five minutes who is left out (3)

The bars above counted every man on the roster with enough ice time to weigh. The paragraphs name whoever they name, and no rule says who that should be — so this says who it was, over the write-up as a whole. Each section below reaches far fewer than this, which is the figure that matters: the section is where the selection happens, and the count sits under each one. The share is of the five-on-five minutes played by the 23 men on this roster who have a measured record.

Not named: David Gustafsson, Ville Koivunen, Hendrix Lapierre.

Who this names 8 of 26 on the roster · 38% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Justin Brazeau, Declan Carlile, Egor Chinakhov, Sidney Crosby, David Gustafsson, Ben Kindel, Ville Koivunen, Kaedan Korczak, Andrei Kuzmenko, Hendrix Lapierre, Sergei Murashov, Tommy Novak, Rickard Rakell, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Nick Robertson, Arturs Silovs, Elmer Soderblom, Ilya Solovyov.

What the Quant Says

The third-highest-scoring team in the league, and the oldest engine driving it. Pittsburgh scored 293 goals and finished 17.9 above expectation, fourth, while ranking 4th in even-strength expected goals per 60 and 8th in chance share — a genuinely good attack, flattered on top of that.

The goaltending was neutral, 2.8 goals worse than the chances faced. The structural fact is the roster: 51 per cent of the skater points came from men aged 33 and up, the highest share in the league, and nobody else clears 45. Continuity is 66.3 per cent, 28th, and the 2 men the club cannot replace are 36 and 39.

What the Scout Says

4 men in their late thirties who can still decide a hockey game, and a supporting roster built with unusual care around what they can no longer do. Sidney Crosby's hands below the goal line remain the best in the sport, and he still protects the puck with his back to pressure and waits for a defenceman to commit. Evgeni Malkin is enormous, holds it, and makes the pass out of a corner nobody else on the ice saw. Erik Karlsson defends by having the puck instead of defending. Kris Letang has played through more than any scouting report can hold and is still taking 22 minutes.

Around them the club has assembled quick, honest, small forwards — Blake Lizotte, Connor Dewar, Bryan Rust — and a set of net-front finishers who shoot from the right places. What it has not assembled is a goaltender, or a defenceman who can win the front of his own net. Karlsson and Samuel Girard both defend entirely by avoiding contact, and Ryan Graves cannot recover when beaten. That is the shape of the season: a club that can still score against anyone and cannot yet stop the puck.

How they were used

2025-26 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
