Last Season
Twenty-two goals and 31 assists in 81 games — 53 points, plus-four, at 16:30 a night. Nine points in his last ten games.
The Finesse Game
The shot selection is the best on a club full of good shot selection. Fifty-two per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet and only seven per cent from beyond forty, with a median of 18 — the shortest average distance of any Hurricane forward.
That is a five-foot-eleven winger who has decided the outside is not worth his time. Twenty-five goals came out of 280 attempts, and the rate will hold because the ice he shoots from does not depend on luck.
The passing is quick and unselfish. Thirty-one assists in a middle-six role.
The Physical Game
Five foot eleven, 185, and he takes a beating to be where he is. Forty penalty minutes is a small forward who does not back down.
He is not moving anybody. He is arriving before the defenceman decides to move him, which is a different and entirely legitimate skill.
The Intangibles
Fifty-eight point three per cent of the expected goals — 98th percentile — and 60.7 per cent of the shot attempts, 99th, with the goals 52-38 in his favour across 1,126 minutes.
A hundred and ninth overall pick in 2021, 162 games in, and already one of the better two-way wingers in the league by the numbers. He is 23.
Carolina has three top-six forwards under twenty-five who are all under six feet and all shoot from inside twenty. That is not an accident and it is the most interesting roster construction in the book.
