Last Season

Seven goals and 12 assists in 55 games — 19 points, plus-six, at 13:52 a night with 25 penalty minutes.

The Finesse Game

Modest. Seventy-seven unblocked attempts, six goals, median 24 feet with 42 per cent from inside twenty.

A hundred and forty-five points in 434 career games is a fourth-line rate. He is not here to score.

The Physical Game

Five foot nine and 176 pounds, and he plays a genuinely hard checking game at that size — 25 penalty minutes, a willing forechecker, and he goes into corners against men fifty pounds heavier without hesitating.

The speed is the asset and it is what makes the rest possible.

The Intangibles

Fifty-two point three per cent of the expected goals, 73rd percentile, and 52.8 per cent of the shot attempts, 81st, across 618 minutes.

Those are good fourth-line numbers, and the goals went 29-26 in his favour.

Eight points in his last ten. He is 28, undrafted out of St Cloud State, and has made 434 NHL games out of being too small and refusing to accept it. Pittsburgh’s bottom six is full of exactly this kind of player and it is one of the better-constructed parts of the roster.
