That is a long way out for twenty-one goals in thirteen minutes a night, and it works because the shot beats goaltenders clean rather than through traffic. It is also the least repeatable way to score.

The Physical Game

There is no forechecking game and no wall play — the entire proposition is finding space and shooting from it.

The Intangibles

He is 25, a twenty-first overall pick who spent four difficult seasons in Columbus, and 113 points in 247 games. Pittsburgh finished fourth at generating even-strength offence, and a shooter of this kind is a reasonable bet on a club that manufactures chances rather than one that needs them created.
