The Physical Game

Six foot even, 195, and light. Thirty-one penalty minutes in 74 games says he competes.

He does not win wall battles and the game depends on finding space.

The Intangibles

Fifty-six per cent of the expected goals, 91st percentile, and 54.3 per cent of the shot attempts, 88th, in 638 minutes.

Those are excellent numbers produced in under nine minutes a night on a good club, which is the standard sheltered-fourth-liner warning — and they are good enough to be worth a look at more ice.

He is 24, a twenty-second overall pick whose junior career was interrupted by serious concussions, and reaching 158 NHL games at all is more than most expected. Pittsburgh has room in the middle six that Washington did not.
