The Finesse Game

A finisher who needs the ice manufactured for him. A hundred and twenty unblocked attempts, thirteen goals, median 24 feet with 43 per cent from inside twenty.

Eight of thirteen goals on the power play is a very high share and tells you where he is useful. Eighty-five goals in 271 career games includes a 39-goal season in Vancouver that nobody has come close to repeating.

The Physical Game

Five foot eleven, 200, and he does not compete for pucks. Sixteen penalty minutes in 52 games.

This is the criticism that has followed him through four organisations in four seasons: the hands are real and the rest of the game is negotiable.

The Intangibles

Fifty-three point two per cent of the expected goals, 78th percentile, and 53.4 per cent of the shot attempts, 83rd, in 607 minutes on a strong Los Angeles club.

Those are good numbers and they are the ones he has posted everywhere while being moved repeatedly, which is its own kind of scouting report.

He is 30, undrafted, and arrives on a club that finished fourteenth on the power play with Crosby, Malkin and Karlsson to feed him. If it works anywhere, it works here.
