Last Season

Nineteen goals and 42 assists in 56 games — 61 points, plus-13, at 17:36 a night with 61 penalty minutes. Twenty-six games missed. His 1,269th career game and his 1,407th point.

He turned 40 in July.

The Finesse Game

Still one of the most dangerous puck-carriers alive when he is upright. He is enormous, he protects it, and the pass he makes out of a corner is the one nobody else on the ice saw.

Forty-two assists in 56 games is a point-a-game playmaker’s rate at forty years old.

The shooting is well placed: 197 unblocked attempts, nineteen goals, median 25 feet with 43 per cent from inside twenty.

The Physical Game

Six foot five, 213, and he has spent two decades being difficult in ways that occasionally cost his team. Sixty-one penalty minutes.

The body is the whole question now. Twenty-six games missed, and that is the pattern rather than the exception.

The Intangibles

Fifty-two per cent of the expected goals, 70th percentile, with the goals 39-26 in his favour across 761 minutes.

Fourteen points in his last ten, six of them goals.

Five hundred and thirty-three goals, 874 assists, three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe and a Hart. He is forty and scoring at better than a point a game whenever he plays, which last season was two thirds of it.
