The Physical Game
Six foot two, 185, and light, with a compact positional style rather than an athletic one. He is calm, he does not fight pucks, and the depth management is disciplined for his age.
Five games is nothing and it would be dishonest to build a technical assessment on it.
The Mental Game
A fourth-round pick out of Russia who has moved quickly through the American League, and a shutout in a five-game NHL sample is the kind of thing that gets a young goaltender remembered.
The Intangibles
The context is the whole page. Pittsburgh’s goaltending came in twelve goals worse than the chances it faced, and Silovs — the man holding the job — stopped .8873 and finished the season at .852 across his last ten.
The club has Crosby at thirty-nine, Malkin at forty, Letang at thirty-nine and Karlsson at thirty-six, and it finished fourth in the league at generating even-strength offence. The one position it has not solved is the one that decides games.
He is 22 with five NHL appearances. That is not an answer yet. On this roster it is the most interesting question.
