Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

A hundred and twelve points and the best chance creation in hockey two years ago; eighty-one points, five goaltenders and a rebuilt blue line now.

Who this names 16 of 23 on the roster · 76% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jake Allen, Nathan Bastian, Nico Daws, Erik Haula, Curtis Lazar, Dawson Mercer, Ondrej Palat.

What the Quant Says

38-39-5, 81 points, 23rd in the league. Two seasons ago this club went 52-22-8 for 112 points and finished third in the league.

Every input moved the wrong way at once. Chance creation went from 1st to 10th, chance suppression from 7th to 21st, and the goaltending from 5.5 goals better than the chances to 16.6 goals worse. That last number is a twenty-two-goal swing and it is the largest single piece of a thirty-one-point fall.

264 goals for and 283 against, with five goaltenders, a 20-year-old and a 19-year-old on the top four of the blue line, and Dougie Hamilton for twenty games.

The response has been a wholesale rebuild of everything except the forwards. Brett Pesce, Brenden Dillon and Johnathan Kovacevic replace Marino, Bahl and Miller; Jacob Markstrom replaces four goaltenders; Stefan Noesen, Tomas Tatar and Paul Cotter replace Toffoli, Holtz and McLeod.

Jack Hughes is 23 with 281 points in 306 games. Jesper Bratt is 26 with 359 in 471. Nico Hischier is 25 with 353 in 452. Luke Hughes is 21 and Simon Nemec is 20. The core is intact and young and the eighty-one points were not about it.

What the Scout Says

A young top six, two defencemen who were 20 and 19 last season, and a supporting cast bought in one summer.

Jack Hughes was first overall in 2019 and has 114 goals in 306 games at 5-11 and 175. Nico Hischier was first overall in 2017. Luke Hughes was fourth overall in 2021 and played 21:28 a night at 20. Simon Nemec was second overall in 2022 and played 19:52 at 19. Four first-round picks inside the top four selections, all of them on the roster at once.

Three of the roster are Swiss-born — Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler — which is more than any other club in this edition carries. The rest of the roster is the summer: Dillon, Pesce, Kovacevic, Noesen, Tatar, Cotter, MacDermid and Markstrom.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
