The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe best power play in the league, a top-ten defensive club, and a top six that has never once been healthy at the same time.
Who this names 9 of 23 on the roster · 51% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Jake Allen, Connor Brown, Dennis Cholowski, Paul Cotter, Evgenii Dadonov, Brenden Dillon, Cody Glass, Luke Glendening, Zack MacEwen, Jacob Markstrom, Timo Meier, Dawson Mercer, Simon Nemec, Ondrej Palat.
What the Quant Says
91 points, a first-round exit, and the best power play in the league by a clear margin.
The underlying club is genuinely good — 10th in shot-attempt share, 11th at preventing chances, 13th in goaltending, 7th on the kill — and the thing standing between it and more is availability. Jack Hughes played 62 games, Dougie Hamilton 64, Jonas Siegenthaler 55, Brett Pesce 72. Those are the four most important players on the roster after Bratt and Hischier.
What is unambiguous: Bratt at 88 points, Hischier at 35 goals and the hardest matchup, Luke Hughes at 44 points at 21, and Kovacevic as one of the better waiver-wire finds in this edition. What is not: two 35-year-old goaltenders with the same numbers, one of whom cost a first-round pick, and a 2nd overall pick from 2022 who posted the worst chance share in this chapter.
What the Scout Says
A well-built club with a genuinely elite power play, an underrated blue line, and a top six that has never been on the ice together.
Jack Hughes changes direction at full pace with the puck, which means a defenceman who steps up is beaten and one who backs off gives him the zone — and at 5-11 and 175 he is separated from possession by anyone who gets a body on him, and has now had two shoulder surgeries in four years. Jesper Bratt holds the puck on the wall longer than his size should permit and puts it through the space a committed defender leaves; 67 assists on a club that scored 242 goals is remarkable.
Nico Hischier is the one who can be planned around: 52 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet, the hardest defensive assignment on the roster, and 20 penalty minutes taking it. Stefan Noesen shoots from a median of 13 feet and stands in the crease absorbing cross-checks for a living. Johnathan Kovacevic is 6-5 and closes a rush with reach and was acquired for a fourth-round pick.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
