Fifty-one games in Boston, 4 goals and 12 assists, 12:50 a night and minus-11. He took 47.6 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 611 minutes, the 34th percentile, and his ice went 33-28 against an expectation of 21.33-23.45.
Boston finished fifth in the league in finishing and this is what that looked like on a fourth line: twelve goals better than the chances in one direction and five better in the other. He converted 7.14 per cent of 56 shots against a career 10.78.
The Finesse Game
Fifty-six shots at a median of 19 feet with 52 per cent from inside 20. Everything he does happens within twenty feet of a net and it has to, because the skating is now the slowest on any roster he joins.
The hands in tight are genuinely good and always have been — 183 career assists in 780 games, most of them made from below the goal line with a defenceman on his back.
The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 234 with 990 penalty minutes in 780 games, and the size is the entire professional case. He is hard to move from the front of the net and a defenceman who wants him out of there has to make a decision about how much he wants it.
He takes liberties with people who have taken them with his teammates, and he has answered for it about four hundred times. Sixty penalty minutes in 51 games at 36 is not a man winding down.
The Intangibles
Three Stanley Cups in a row across two clubs — St Louis in 2019, Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021 — from a sixth-round pick who has played for six clubs. There is not a room in the league that does not know who he is.
Chicago signed a thirty-six-year-old fourth-line winger to a club that will lose fifty games. He is there so that the next man who runs Connor Bedard has to think about it first, and that is a real job.
