All 82 games, 22 goals and 13 assists, 2 on the power play, 16:34 a night, and plus-4 on a club that finished 31st. He took 42.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,086 minutes, the 7th percentile, and his ice went 28-53 against an expectation of 32.34-44.24.

A plus-4 on this roster is remarkable and the 22 goals are not repeatable. He converted 17.46 per cent against a career 10.55 across 578 shots, and 22 goals is more than he had scored in any two seasons combined.

The Finesse Game

One hundred and twenty-six shots at a median of 28 feet with 36 per cent from inside 20. The shot is ordinary and the placement last season was not, which is the definition of a year that does not come back.

Thirteen assists in 82 games is the truer measure of the puck skill. He is a straight-line player who arrives on time rather than a man who creates, and 61 goals and 78 assists in 443 games is the career that goes with it.

The Physical Game

He wins the draw that begins the shift and he is the man the club sends out to start in its own end. Forty-three penalty minutes in 82 games is an ordinary rate for a checking centre who takes the hardest defensive assignment every night.

At 6-2 and 200 he is strong enough on the wall to hold a puck for a change and he closes on a defenceman quickly, which is most of why the penalty kill worked.

The Intangibles

The 29th pick in 2013, nine seasons, and a career spent being the fourth-best centre on good clubs and the best available one here. Eighty-two games at 29 on a club that lost fifty-three of them is its own kind of professionalism.

The goals will fall by half. The role will not change, and on a club this thin the role is worth more.
