Last Season
Eighty games in Toronto, 21 goals and 22 assists, 5 on the power play, 16:03 a night and plus-2. He took 56.4 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,142 minutes, the 93rd percentile, and his ice went 66-45 against an expectation of 60.19-46.45.
That is the second-best chance share on the Chicago roster and it was earned somewhere else, against the Atlantic, on a club that made the playoffs. He converted 13.13 per cent of 160 shots against a career 13.90 across 813.
The Finesse Game
He shoots from a median of 18 feet with 55 per cent of his attempts from inside 20, which is a scoring profile almost nobody on this roster has. The goals come from the paint and the second chance rather than from a clean look.
The hands are better than the reputation. One hundred and forty-eight career assists in 406 games is a real playmaking rate for a man whose whole method is described as agitation, and he makes a quick short pass out of a scrum as well as anybody here.
The skating is the limit. He is not fast and never has been, and everything he does happens within fifteen feet of a net for that reason.
The Physical Game
He is among the most irritating forwards in the league to play against — he stands where he is not wanted, talks the whole time, and does not move when a defenceman arrives. Two hundred and forty-eight penalty minutes in 406 games is the cost and he pays it willingly.
At 6-2 and 200 he is not the biggest man on any ice, and the effect is entirely about refusing to leave rather than about winning a collision. He retaliates, and 53 penalty minutes in 80 games last season includes some that hurt his club.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick in 2013 who has scored 113 goals in 406 games and been part of a deadline trade to Boston and a free-agent year in Toronto. He is 29 and this is the first time a club has signed him to be one of its best forwards.
On a roster with a nineteen-year-old centre and no net-front presence under 36, he is precisely the thing missing.
