The club’s goaltending came in 9.4 goals worse than the chances faced, 22nd in the league, but that number belongs to two men and the other one posted an .8790. A .9072 across 56 games in front of the 30th-ranked chance suppression in hockey is the single most creditable individual season in this chapter.
The Physical Game
He plays aggressively, meeting the shooter at the top of the crease rather than waiting on the line. The athleticism is the method and always has been — he is out of position more often than a positional goaltender and he reaches saves a positional goaltender does not.
The lateral recovery is quick and on this club it has to be. The rebound control is the weakness and has been across 390 games; pucks come off him into the slot and behind a defence that cannot clear the front of the net that should have been fatal. It was not, and a .9072 says so.
The Mental Game
Eighteen wins on a club that won twenty-three. Thirty-one losses does something to most goaltenders and the save percentage held from October to April, which is the only measure of temperament that means anything over a season like this one.
He is 32 and this was the twelfth year of a career that has been written off twice — after Detroit and again after a .8885 in Toronto.
The Intangibles
A fifth-round pick, 141st overall in 2010, with 390 games, 168 wins and 25 shutouts. He has been a starter in Detroit, Carolina and now Chicago and has a career .9072 to show for it.
On a club that is not trying to win this season he is the reason some of the scores stay respectable, and he is the most valuable trade asset on the roster who is not nineteen years old.
