The read
the numbers, and the eye1st in the league in shot-attempt share and chance share, 28th in finishing and 25th in goaltending — the most thoroughly unrewarded season in this edition.
Who this names 8 of 20 on the roster · 43% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Frederik Andersen, William Carrier, Jalen Chatfield, Shayne Gostisbehere, Taylor Hall, Pyotr Kochetkov, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, K'Andre Miller, Jordan Staal, Logan Stankoven, Andrei Svechnikov, Sean Walker.
What the Quant Says
99 points, a third conference final in six years, and the most thoroughly unrewarded season in this edition.
1st in the league in shot-attempt share at 59.2 per cent. 1st in chance share. 1st in creating chances. 11th at preventing them. 2nd on the penalty kill. By process this was comfortably the best team in hockey, and the five-on-five goals came out 168-158 against an expected 183-145.
Finishing was 28th and goaltending 25th — roughly 29 goals surrendered at the two ends where a club has least control. That is the reason a team this dominant finished 99 points rather than 115, and it is the reason to expect a better record next season from a roster that has arguably improved: Ehlers and Miller in, Burns and Orlov out.
It is also the reason for the doubt. Three conference finals, three eliminations, and a crease that has not been solved in any of them.
What the Scout Says
The most systematically constructed team in the league, staffed almost entirely with players who do one specific thing the structure needs, and a crease that has undone all of it three times.
Sebastian Aho is a complete centre with no weakness in the puck game — a quick heavy release, passing better than the assist total, and the same play with a lead as without one. Jaccob Slavin takes pucks off attackers without contact, at the exact moment a play is about to become dangerous, and did it for 80 games while taking 8 penalty minutes. Seth Jarvis is first to every loose puck and has hands that work at that pace, which is what turns a forecheck into a chance rather than a possession.
What is unusual is how far the idea runs down the roster. Eric Robinson takes 55 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet. Jackson Blake takes 62 per cent from a median of 15. Mark Jankowski takes 62 per cent. Jordan Martinook takes 46. This is not four coincidences; it is a club that has decided where goals come from and staffed every line accordingly. The exception is the two men in the crease.
The roster
No measured season behind two of them: Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2024-25.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
