18 goals and 24 assists in 77 games for 42 points, minus-14 — the worst rating on the club — on 15:10 a night.
49.4 per cent at five-on-five, the 44th percentile, on a team whose next-lowest forward was at 53.2 and whose median was 56. On a club that led the league in chance share by four points, being at 49.4 is the most damning number available.
The Finesse Game
The skating is still genuinely good and it is what remains of the player who won a Hart. He carries the puck into the zone with speed and he can still beat a defenceman wide.
12.5 per cent shooting is fair and 30 per cent of his attempts come from inside 20 feet. What has gone is the ability to make anything happen when the first option is covered — 24 assists in 77 games on this club, where everybody’s assists are inflated by possession, is thin.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 210, and he does not play to it. He avoids the wall, does not forecheck heavily, and gives up possession rather than absorbing contact to keep it.
36 penalty minutes. The body has cost him enormously across his career — two seasons largely lost to knee injuries — and 77 games was his healthiest in four years.
The Intangibles
A 1st overall pick, a Hart trophy, and a career spent on clubs that did not work. This is the first genuinely good team he has played a full season for and he was its weakest regular forward.
At 33 that is close to the answer. He is a useful third-line winger on a cheap deal, and the club should not be asking him for more.
