Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The fewest goals against in the league and the best penalty kill in it while taking more shorthanded minutes than anybody — and a five-on-five finishing figure that ranked 25th.

Who this names 9 of 21 on the roster · 48% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Frederik Andersen, Jesper Fast, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Jordan Martinook, Martin Necas, Brett Pesce, Antti Raanta, Brady Skjei, Jordan Staal, Derek Stepan, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen.

What the Quant Says

54-20-8, 116 points, 3rd in the league and first in the Metropolitan.

278 goals for, 9th. 202 against — fewest in the league. 2nd in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 56.2 per cent, 3rd in chance share at 55.2, 2nd at creating chances at even strength and 1st on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 193 goals scored against 198.0 expected, and 142 conceded against 160.7. The finishing was 25th in the league at minus-5.0 and the goaltending 4th at plus-18.7. A club that created chances better than anybody but one converted them worse than most, and its crease covered the difference twice over.

Jaccob Slavin finished plus-35 with ten penalty minutes in 79 games, killed 3:14 a night — the 99th percentile among defencemen — and took 2.39 pucks away per 60, the 98th. Sebastian Aho scored 37 goals at 16.7 per cent with 63 per cent of his shots from the slot. Seth Jarvis had 40 points at twenty on thirteen minutes a night.

Vincent Trocheck has gone to the Rangers, Nino Niederreiter to Nashville, Tony DeAngelo to Philadelphia, Ian Cole to Tampa and Brendan Smith to New Jersey.

Brent Burns arrives from San Jose at thirty-seven having played 26:09 a night, Max Pacioretty and Dylan Coghlan from Vegas for nothing, Paul Stastny from Winnipeg, Ondrej Kase from Toronto and Calvin de Haan from Chicago.

Pacioretty tore an Achilles tendon in August and will miss most of the season. Both goaltenders are free agents in July. Everything else about this club is settled and excellent.

What the Scout Says

The best defensive structure in hockey, two defencemen who never touch anybody, a first-line centre nobody outside the state can name, and a crease that empties in July.

Sebastian Aho had 81 points and took 2.72 pucks away per 60, the 98th percentile. Jaccob Slavin finished plus-35 with ten penalty minutes. Seth Jarvis scored 17 goals at twenty from a median of 18 feet.

Everything here is deliberate. Rod Brind'Amour's forecheck puts the fourth line in the offensive zone 47 per cent of the time, the defence ends possessions with sticks rather than bodies, and the club takes the most penalties in the league and kills them better than anybody.

The two questions are the finishing, which was 25th, and the goaltending, which was excellent and is contracted for one more year.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
