Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

First in the league in shot-attempt share and first in chance suppression by a distance nobody else was near — and 31st at finishing, which is why 113 points was not more.

Who this names 5 of 24 on the roster · 22% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Sebastian Aho, Frederik Andersen, Brent Burns, Jalen Chatfield, Jack Drury, Jesper Fast, Seth Jarvis, Pyotr Kochetkov, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Jordan Martinook, Martin Necas, Stefan Noesen, Brett Pesce, Antti Raanta, Brady Skjei, Jaccob Slavin, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen.

What the Quant Says

52-21-9, 113 points, 2nd in the league and first in the Metropolitan.

266 goals for, 15th. 213 against, 2nd. First in the league in shot-attempt share at 60.4 per cent, first in chance share at 58.9, third at creating chances at even strength and first at suppressing them.

At five-on-five: 174 goals scored against 192.3 expected, and 139 conceded against 134.2. The finishing was 31st at minus-18.3 and the goaltending 17th. Eighteen goals thrown away at one end by a club that was first in the league at getting to the other one.

The gap between Carolina and the second-best defence in the league is as wide as the gap between second-best and thirteenth. Six of the eleven highest chance shares in this book were recorded here.

Carolina beat the New York Islanders in six and New Jersey in five, and was swept by Florida in the conference final. Four games, no wins, from the best possession club in hockey.

Dmitry Orlov, Tony DeAngelo, Michael Bunting, Maxime Comtois and Brendan Lemieux all arrive. Calvin de Haan, Paul Stastny and Derek Stepan do not.

Everything about this club is settled except the part that decides games. It has now spent several seasons being the best team in the league at the things that are measured before the puck goes in, and the summer's business was three forwards who shoot from inside twenty feet.

What the Scout Says

The best possession club in hockey, and it could not finish.

Carolina took 60.4 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, the highest figure in the league. Six of the eleven highest chance shares in this book were recorded here. The club scored 18.3 fewer goals at five-on-five than its chances were worth, 31st in the league.

The system is the identity: hold the line, move the puck, deny the middle, and outshoot everybody by a distance. What it has never solved is the last ten feet, and the summer's signings say the club knows it.

How they were used

2022-23 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
