Carolina led the league in chance share and finished 11th in chance suppression at 2.56 expected goals against per 60, and its goaltending still came in 13.5 goals worse than what it faced, 25th in the league. A .8968 behind this defence is a considerably worse result than the same number behind a bad one.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 196, and the game is athletic and unstructured — he moves a great deal, he is quick, and he makes spectacular saves out of positions he should not have been in.
The technique is the problem. He is square less often than a goaltender of this size should be, the depth in the crease varies shift to shift, and the rebound control is poor, which puts him in the scrambles his athleticism then has to solve. Behind a club that gives up few chances, the goals that go in tend to be the ones he created work for himself.
The Mental Game
He competes ferociously and it occasionally works against him — the game gets loud, and a goaltender who fights every puck in a low-event game is a goaltender who eventually loses one.
There is no evidence of him giving up on a night and a good deal of evidence of him being unable to settle into one.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick with genuine tools and four seasons of a save percentage that has not once been above league average.
That is now the club’s central problem. Carolina has been the best possession team in hockey for three seasons and has been eliminated in three conference finals, and the crease is where the difference is. At 26 there is time; there is not much evidence.
