The Physical Game
6-4 and 229, and the game is the opposite of Kochetkov’s — large, still, positionally exact, and reliant on being in the right place rather than on getting there.
At his best that is an extremely efficient way to play behind a low-event team, because he does not have to move much and the chances are few. What has thinned with age is the recovery: when he is beaten laterally he no longer gets to the second puck, and a 36-year-old playing this style has a narrow margin.
The Mental Game
Twelve seasons, three organisations, and a temperament that has never wavered through a run of injuries that would have ended most careers.
He returns from long absences and plays well immediately, which is unusual and is most of the reason the club keeps re-signing him.
The Intangibles
At 36, on a one-year arrangement, as the more reliable half of a tandem that was 25th in the league.
The honest reading is that Carolina has spent four seasons hoping a 6-4 goaltender with a long injury history will be available in May, and it has not happened yet. The club is the best possession team in hockey and the crease is the only thing it has not solved.
