Last Season
24 games, 12-7-5, a .9091 save percentage and a 2.44 goals-against average on 627 shots, with four shutouts — as many as Raanta managed in 27 games and four more than Andersen managed in 34.
It was his first substantial NHL season. He had played three games in 2021-22.
627 shots is not a sample anyone should draw a conclusion from, and four shutouts in 24 starts behind the league’s best defensive club is the kind of number that flatters a young goaltender into a job.
The Finesse Game
6-3 and 196, and he plays an aggressive game — he comes out to meet the shooter at the top of the crease rather than waiting on the line, which is a choice that works better in front of a club that does not concede odd-man rushes.
He handles the puck well enough that the club uses him in the breakout, which matters more in Carolina’s system than it would elsewhere.
All of that is watching rather than measurement. This book has no goaltender tracking of any kind — the save percentage, the shots faced and the shutouts are everything the data holds, and none of it separates a 23-year-old with a future from a 23-year-old having a good half-season behind a great team.

The club went into last season with a 34-year-old and a 33-year-old in the crease and came out of it with a 24-year-old who matched both. That is the most interesting thing about Carolina’s goaltending and it is worth about one season of patience before anyone decides what it means.
