This Season So Far

The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

27 games, 19-3-3, a .9099 save percentage and a 2.23 goals-against average on 644 shots, with four shutouts.

Nineteen wins against three regulation losses is the sort of record that says more about the club than the goaltender, and on this club it says exactly that: Carolina was first in the league in expected goals against a sixty.

His career line is 127-73-27 and a .9178 across 253 games, which is better than the .9099 and was compiled largely in Arizona behind considerably less.

The Finesse Game

644 shots in 27 games is 24 a night. Four shutouts in 27 starts is a striking number and it is a joint achievement — a goaltender needs to be good and a club needs to concede almost nothing, and Carolina conceded almost nothing.

He is 6-0, which is small for a modern goaltender, and the career has been built on moving well rather than covering space. He gets across the crease and re-sets before the second shot arrives, which is the part of the job the size does not do for him.

What this book cannot do is grade any of that from the data it has. There is no tracking for goaltenders in this feed — no shot-location breakdown of saves, no rebound measurement, no timing. The save percentage and the shutouts are the entire record, and the rest is watching.

The Physical Game

6-0 and 195, 34 years old, and a body that has not held up: 12 games in 2018-19, 33 in 2019-20, 12 in 2020-21, 28 in 2021-22, 27 in this one.

He has played more than 40 games once in his career, and that was 47 in 2017-18. Whatever he is, he is not a starter, and Carolina has never asked him to be.

The Intangibles

He arrived without a pick attached — undrafted out of Finland, signed by Chicago, and 253 NHL games later.

A .9178 career save percentage from an undrafted goaltender is the sort of thing this book exists to point at. Every club in the league had someone watching the Finnish leagues, and none of them spent a pick.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

  • a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.
