Last Season
11 goals and 31 assists in 70 games for Philadelphia — 42 points at 22:04 a night, minus-27, with 73 penalty minutes.
44.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,187 minutes, the 19th percentile, and that is the number that matters. His ice went 48-57 against an expectation of 49.2-60.49, so the goals against were actually better than the chances predicted — the minus-27 overstates how badly he was beaten, and the 19th percentile does not.
He had 51 points in 64 games for Carolina the season before this one. The club is buying that back.
The Finesse Game
174 attempts at a median of 49 feet, 67 per cent from beyond forty, off a 91.2 mph shot at the 52nd percentile. Five goals on 114 shots from beyond forty, six on 57 from inside it.
The 31 assists are the skill. He runs a power play, he sees the seam, and 154 assists in 340 career games is a genuine rate for a defenceman. Carolina’s power play was 18th in expected goals a sixty last season and he is the most obvious answer to that.
What he is not is a defender, and a 19th-percentile share of the expected goals over 1,187 minutes is not a small sample or a bad-luck year.
The Physical Game
6-0 and 190, 73 penalty minutes, and a record of taking the penalty that follows losing the argument rather than the puck. The 73 minutes are not the physical game; they are the temper.
3.13 miles a game at the 87th percentile and 21.9 mph at the 34th. He moves constantly and not quickly.
The Intangibles
This is a difficult player to place and the difficulty is not statistical. He has been moved repeatedly and is 27, and one of the clubs that moved him is taking him back after a season in which it conceded 57 goals with him on the ice.
Carolina’s structure is the strongest argument for him: on a club that led the league in shot attempts, the 19th-percentile share may not survive contact with better teammates. That is a bet, and the report should say so rather than pretend the bet has already paid.
