Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Last in the league by every measure that matters, and almost none of it was luck — the process was 25th, 27th, 28th and 31st.

Who this names 9 of 22 on the roster · 51% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jake Allen, Joel Armia, Cole Caufield, Kirby Dach, Evgenii Dadonov, Jonathan Drouin, Mike Matheson, Sean Monahan, Samuel Montembeault, Michael Pezzetta, Cayden Primeau, Corey Schueneman, Chris Wideman.

What the Quant Says

22-49-11, 55 points — 32nd in the league. 221 goals for, 27th; 319 against, 32nd.

Nothing here was bad luck. Finishing rated 23rd at minus-3.2 and goaltending 23rd at minus-13 — both mildly negative and neither large. The five-on-five goals came in 154-196 against an expectation of 157.2-183, so the result was close to what the shots deserved.

The process is the story and it is bad everywhere. 25th in attempt share, 27th in chances, 22nd in expected goals per 60, 28th in expected goals against per 60, 28th on the power play, 25th on the penalty kill.

This is the opposite of the Los Angeles chapter in this same batch. Los Angeles was a good club with a terrible percentage. Montreal was a bad club with an ordinary one.

What the Scout Says

The pair file here is unusually flat, and that is itself the finding. Nothing on this roster drives play and nothing is being dragged by one man — the regular figures sit between 43 and 52 per cent, and the club's problem is distributed across all of it.

The exceptions are small and worth naming. Mike Hoffman read 40.1 and 39.4 per cent away from Brendan Gallagher and Nick Suzuki respectively — the lowest regular figures on the worst club in the league — while Gallagher read 53.6 without him and Suzuki 44.2.

Jake Evans lifted David Savard by ten points, 53.0 together against Savard's 42.5 alone, which is the largest positive effect any Montreal forward had on a defenceman.

The deployment pattern is severe and deliberate. Rem Pitlick had the 4th-hardest offensive-zone deployment of the 365 forwards the tracking covers and Christian Dvorak the 8th, with Josh Anderson 5th, Nick Suzuki at the 10th percentile and Joel Edmundson the hardest of any Montreal skater. A club that buries this many players has to be burying them behind somebody, and there is nobody.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
