Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

9th in creating chances and 31st at preventing them, a first playoff appearance in four years, and a 162-pound rookie defenceman with 60 assists.

Who this names 7 of 20 on the roster · 43% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Zachary Bolduc, Alexandre Carrier, Kirby Dach, Jakub Dobes, Jake Evans, Brendan Gallagher, Kaiden Guhle, Patrik Laine, Mike Matheson, Samuel Montembeault, Alex Newhook, Jayden Struble, Joe Veleno.

What the Quant Says

91 points and a first playoff appearance in four years, from a club that was 28th in shot-attempt share and 31st at preventing chances.

The attack arrived ahead of schedule — 9th in creating chances — and the defence did not. What makes the chapter worth reading is who did it: Lane Hutson at 21 with 60 assists and the best chance share on the blue line at 162 pounds. Juraj Slafkovský at 21 taking 56 per cent of his shots from the paint. Nick Suzuki at 26 with 89 points and 8 penalty minutes. Cole Caufield at 24 with 37 goals.

Against that: a penalty kill that is 29th while taking the most shorthanded minutes in the league, a power play that is 26th with Laine's shot on it, and a blue line whose second-best defenceman by chance share played fifteen minutes a night. Noah Dobson is the answer to the third of those. The first is a matter of five men and their tempers.

What the Scout Says

A young, skilled, undisciplined club whose best player weighs 162 pounds.

Lane Hutson escapes pressure by turning into it and coming out the other side — edges and change of direction rather than top speed — and holds the puck a beat longer than anybody is comfortable with before delivering it through traffic rather than around it. Nick Suzuki plays a patient, deliberate game and took 8 penalty minutes across 82 games at 20 minutes a night. Cole Caufield's release comes off the pass without settling, which is what beats a goaltender who has read the play correctly.

Around them the roster is heavy in ways that cost more than they return. Arber Xhekaj is 6-4 and 240 and took 118 penalty minutes. Josh Anderson is 6-3 and 226 and took 90. Both are genuinely frightening to play against and both play for a club that leads the league in shorthanded minutes and finishes 27th at killing them. Juraj Slafkovský at 6-3 and 225 is the one big man here whose weight is doing productive work.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
