Forty-five games, 16 goals and 18 assists with 7 on the power play, 18:28 a night and plus-11. He converted 15.53 per cent of 103 shots.
He took 57.7 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 610 minutes, the 96th percentile and the highest share on the club, and his ice went 40-22 against an expectation of 28.59-20.96. Thirty-seven games missed is the only thing wrong with the season.
The Finesse Game
He shoots from a median of 15 feet with 57 per cent of his attempts from inside 20 — the shortest median distance of any forward on the roster. He arrives at the net rather than shooting from where he happens to be.
A career 10.41 per cent across 1,124 shots and 117 goals in 521 games. Sixteen in forty-five is a career-best rate and it came on the best line he has played on.
The Physical Game
He forechecks aggressively and is first to the puck on the wall more often than a 5-11 winger has any business being. Fourteen penalty minutes in 45 games is a low rate for a man who initiates that much.
He kills penalties and has 8 career shorthanded goals, and the anticipation is the reason — he reads the first pass and jumps it. He is not big enough to move anybody and does not try.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick in 2013 out of Piikkio, eight seasons, and the man who scored the series-winning goal that took Montreal to a final and then won a Stanley Cup in Colorado a year later.
He is 29 and has played 45, 64 and 74 games in three seasons. When he is on the ice this club controls everything.
