A good chance share and a bad result, which is the sixth defenceman’s lot. He arrives in Colorado at 33 as insurance rather than as a plan.
The Finesse Game
Twenty-four goals in 632 games at 2.85 per cent is one of the lowest conversion rates any defenceman carries into a season, and 6 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet with 75 per cent from beyond 40 explains it. He shoots to create a rebound and nothing else.
One hundred and seventeen assists in 632 games. The first pass is quick and correct and there is no second idea behind it.
The Physical Game
He is 6-1 and 192 and defends by closing the gap early rather than by finishing checks. Twenty-two penalty minutes in 59 games is a moderate rate.
He blocks shots and puts himself in front of things, which across twelve seasons has cost him a great deal of health. He does not win the wall against heavy wingers.
The Intangibles
The twelfth pick in 2009 who never became a top-pair defenceman and has instead played 632 games as a reliable third-pair one across five clubs. That is a career and it is not the one anybody projected.
