Seventy-four games, 9 goals and 17 assists, 1 shorthanded, 75 penalty minutes, 13:41 a night and minus-5. He took 167 shots and converted 5.39 per cent.
He took 49.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 910 minutes, the 51st percentile, and his ice went 45-37 against an expectation of 41.83-42.10. One hundred and sixty-seven shots from a fourth-line winger is an enormous volume and nine goals is what came of it.
The Finesse Game
The skating is elite and it is the whole reason he is in the league — straight-line speed that turns a dump-in into a race he wins. He is 6-2 and 209 and moves like a much smaller man.
One hundred and sixty-seven shots at a median of 26 feet with 38 per cent from inside 20, converted at 5.39 per cent against a career 8.37. The hands do not keep up with the feet and never have — 87 goals on 1,040 career shots.
Seventeen assists in 74 games. He does not make plays at speed and the puck usually leaves his stick as a shot because the alternative is worse.
The Physical Game
Five hundred and two penalty minutes in 476 games is the record of a man who arrives late and hard and does not apologise. He finishes every check at speed and it is genuinely frightening to defend against.
He takes liberties and a fair share of the 75 penalty minutes last season were taken after being beaten to a puck he expected to reach. On a club killing five minutes a night that is a real cost.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick in 2013 out of Buffalo, seven seasons in New Jersey and now two in Colorado. He is minus-68 across 476 games, mostly on bad clubs.
Colorado signed him for the speed and the hostility and got exactly both, along with nine goals. He is 29 and the legs are the last thing to go.
