The read
the numbers, and the eyeFourth in the league at suppressing chances at even strength and 28th in goals against, because the goaltending finished 42 goals worse than the shots it faced — sixteen clear of the next-worst club in hockey.
Who this names 17 of 24 on the roster · 72% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Rodrigo Abols, Noah Cates, Tyson Foerster, Aleksei Kolosov, Rasmus Ristolainen, Owen Tippett, Egor Zamula.
What the Quant Says
76 points, 33-39-10, and a fifth straight spring outside the playoffs.
The club was 4th in the league at suppressing chances at even strength, 8th in five-on-five chance share, 12th on the penalty kill, and 28th in goals against. At five-on-five it conceded 188 goals against an expectation of 145.9.
The goaltending finished 42.1 goals worse than the shots it faced. That is 32nd in the league and it is sixteen goals clear of 31st. No other club in this edition is losing games this way.
It is the most recoverable failure in this book, which is the reason to say it plainly. A club that is 28th at suppressing chances has to rebuild a defence; a club that is 4th has to find a goaltender. Dan Vladar was signed in the summer and Samuel Ersson is 25 and has played two full seasons, and one of those two facts has to become an answer.
The second problem is harder. The power play was 32nd and the club scored 238 goals, and the roster above the third line is a 20-year-old Russian, a 28-year-old winger with a career-high 76 points and a captain coming back from a broken back.
The organisation spent the year deciding. Scott Laughton was traded to Toronto, Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to Calgary, and Ryan Poehling to Anaheim in the summer for Trevor Zegras. Christian Dvorak, Carl Grundstrom, Noah Juulsen and Dan Vladar were signed. John Tortorella was dismissed in March and Rick Tocchet was hired out of Vancouver to replace him.
What the Scout Says
A young, small, well-coached hockey team that could not stop a puck.
Matvei Michkov is 5-10 and 172 pounds and has the best hands in this chapter by a distance. He holds the puck through contact, he changes his mind mid-play, and he beats a goaltender from an angle the goaltender has not accounted for. He is 20 and he scored 26 goals on a club that scored 222.
Travis Konecny is 5-10 and 192 and plays a great deal larger — he forechecks first, he finishes checks against men thirty pounds heavier, and 53 penalty minutes is mostly the retaliation. Sean Couturier at 6-4 takes half of his shot attempts from inside 20 feet, which for a 32-year-old centre two seasons removed from a broken back is a remarkable thing.
Underneath, the size is at the back. Travis Sanheim is 6-4 and 222 and played every game at twenty-four and a half minutes. Nick Seeler blocks everything and clears his crease. Garnet Hathaway and Nicolas Deslauriers between them have 1,441 career penalty minutes.
And the small men are the good ones. Cam York, Bobby Brink, Emil Andrae, Jamie Drysdale and Michkov are all under 195 pounds, and four of the five were above the 75th percentile in chance share.

How they were used
2024-25 · 79 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
