52.7 per cent at five-on-five, the 77th percentile — the best figure among the club’s forwards. His on-ice goals were 36-45 against an expected 38-34, which is 11 goals of goaltending and finishing running the wrong way underneath the best possession forward on the roster.
The Finesse Game
The passing is the skill and it is genuinely good. He plays a slow, deliberate game, holds the puck below the goal line, and finds the seam a beat later than the defence expects.
144 shots and 14 goals at 9.7 per cent, with 44 per cent of the attempts inside 20 feet — the locations are right and the finish is not. He is a distributor rather than a scorer and has been miscast as the latter for most of his career.
The Physical Game
6 feet and 193, and light. He does not win pucks on the wall, does not forecheck with weight, and gives up possession rather than absorbing a hit.
22 penalty minutes over 81 games. He is not in the traffic, which is both a discipline and a limitation.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick who spent six years in Philadelphia being alternately promoted and scratched, and was traded at 25 for a return that suggested nobody rated him.
The underlying numbers say that judgment was wrong. A 77th-percentile chance share with a minus-17 is a player whose results have been worse than his play for a while, and on a cheap contract he is one of the better bets in this chapter.
