The Finesse Game
188 attempts at a median of 32 feet with 27 per cent from inside 20, converting at 10.6 per cent. He has scored 27, 28 and 20 in three full seasons and the shot has not changed; the volume has.
The skating is the separator — he is among the fastest players here in a straight line and he beats a defenceman wide with speed rather than with a move. What he does not do is create for anybody else: 23 assists in 77 games.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 210 and he does not use it. He is not a forechecker, he does not finish checks, and 16 penalty minutes in 77 games is a winger who is simply not in that part of the game.
He will take a hit to make a play and he does not answer one. On a roster with this much size in the bottom six, he is a skill player who is allowed not to be involved.
The Intangibles
Tenth overall in 2017 by Florida and traded here in 2022 in the Claude Giroux deal — 347 games and 185 points into a career that has now had two very good seasons and one flat one.
He is 26 and on a long contract signed after the 28-goal year. Twenty goals from a player used this way is not a disaster and it is not what the contract was for.
