Last Season
12 goals and 20 assists in 57 games for Anaheim — 32 points at 17:02 a night, minus-8, with 23 penalty minutes. He has now missed a quarter or more of three straight seasons.
The two seasons before the injuries were 61 and 65 points at 20 and 21. Nothing since has been close, and Philadelphia acquired him in the summer on the theory that the reason is the clubs and the health rather than the player.
The Finesse Game
The hands are the reason he exists as a story. He is among the most creative players in the league with the puck in a small space, he attempts passes almost nobody else sees, and a good share of them arrive.
98 attempts and 12 goals at 12.2 per cent. The shot is real and it has never been the first thing about him; 20 assists in 57 games is the honest measure of what he is for.
The Physical Game
6-0 and 185 and light. He does not forecheck with any force, he does not win a puck on the wall, and 23 penalty minutes in 57 games is a player who is not in that part of the game.
The defensive detail has been the criticism in Anaheim for four years and it is the reason he has been used on the wing as often as at centre.
The Intangibles
Ninth overall in 2019 and 268 games in, with 186 points and a highlight reel that got further than the production did.
He is 24. Philadelphia gave up Ryan Poehling and draft capital for him in the summer, which is a low price for a player who scored 65 points at 21, and the whole trade is a bet that the first two seasons were the real ones.
