50.5 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 58th percentile. His ice went 44-43 against an expectation of 48.66-47.71, which is a forward whose even-strength results were level. The minus-17 was collected somewhere other than five-on-five.
The Finesse Game
188 attempts at a median of 33 feet with 27 per cent from inside 20 — he is a shooter who works from the top of the circle rather than the paint, and he converted at 12.8 per cent.
52 assists is the number that changed. He has been a 30-goal scorer here and last season he was a distributor, on a line with a 20-year-old who needed the puck. The playmaking was always there and it had never been the first thing about him.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 192 and he plays a great deal larger. He forechecks first, he finishes checks against men who outweigh him by thirty pounds, and he is thoroughly unpleasant to line up against.
53 penalty minutes in 82 games, and a large share of it is retaliation — he answers everything and takes the second penalty doing it. That has been true for nine seasons and it is not going to change.
The Intangibles
Twenty-fourth overall in 2015 and 646 games into a career spent entirely in one city, most of it on hockey teams that were not good — a minus-43 that says more about them than him.
He is 28, he signed an eight-year extension in 2024, and he is the veteran the club has decided to build the next phase around alongside a Russian rookie and a coach hired in the summer.
