Last Season
15 goals and 30 assists in 79 games — 45 points at 17:18 a night, plus-1, with 41 penalty minutes.
52.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 73rd percentile. His ice went 37-35 against an expectation of 47.84-43.82 — eleven goals of scoring missing and nine extra conceded, and a plus-1 that flatters neither the play nor the results.
The Finesse Game
155 attempts at a median of 20 feet with 50 per cent of them from inside 20 feet — the highest share of any forward on this roster. He does not shoot from distance and has never needed to.
The hands are ordinary and the head is not. He reads a defensive coverage as well as anybody in this book and the 30 assists come from arriving in the right place a half-second before the play does.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 210, and he plays the game in the hard areas by choice. He goes to the front of the net, he wins pucks below the goal line, and he takes the punishment that comes with a 20-foot median shot.
41 penalty minutes in 79 games. He wins the draw that starts the shift and he is the man the club sends out to kill the important penalty, which is the role he has held since he was 22.
The Intangibles
Eighth overall in 2011, a Selke Trophy in 2020, 874 games and 543 points, all of it in Philadelphia, and a captaincy handed to him in 2024.
He lost two full seasons to a broken back and a hip that had to be rebuilt, and he came back to play 79 games at 32. Whatever this roster’s problems are, his willingness is not among them.
