The read
the numbers, and the eyeSixth in the league at suppressing chances and 25th at creating them, outscored 131-148 at five-on-five, and in the playoffs for the first time since 2017 on the most power-play time in hockey.
Who this names 12 of 24 on the roster · 49% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Michael Amadio, Drake Batherson, Thomas Chabot, Nick Jensen, Tyler Kleven, Nikolas Matinpalo, Leevi Meriläinen, David Perron, Shane Pinto, Jake Sanderson, Linus Ullmark, Artem Zub.
What the Quant Says
97 points, 45-30-7, and a playoff place for the first time since 2017.
The club was 6th in the league at suppressing chances at even strength and 25th at creating them, took 50.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, and was outscored 131-148 in that state against an expectation of 142.9-141.7. Seventeen goals disappeared — 11.9 to finishing, 25th in the league, and 6.3 to goaltending, 21st.
They finished the season at 243-234 anyway, because outside five-on-five they were twenty-six goals to the good, on the most power-play time of any club in the league.
That is the whole chapter. A structurally sound defensive team that cannot score, which paid its way into April by drawing more penalties than anybody else. It is not a fragile route to the playoffs in the way that a hot goaltender is — drawing penalties is a repeatable thing a heavy roster does — but it is a narrow one, and 25th in chance creation is what has to change for the club to be anything more than this.
The organisation spent the deadline and the summer agreeing. Josh Norris was traded to Buffalo in March for Dylan Cozens, Fabian Zetterlund was acquired from San Jose, and Jordan Spence, Lars Eller, Kurtis MacDermid and James Reimer were added in the summer. Anton Forsberg went to Los Angeles.
Toronto won the first round in six games. Three of the first four went to overtime, and Ottawa won one of them 4-0 on the road in the fifth.
What the Scout Says
A young, heavy, irritating hockey team with a 37-year-old on the first line and a captain who is the standard for the whole building.
Brady Tkachuk is 6-4 and 226 and the hardest man in this chapter to play against. He finishes every check available to him, he stands in the blue paint on the power play while grown men try to remove him, and 123 penalty minutes in 72 games is a captain who crosses the line and knows exactly where it is. He had the best chance share on the club and his ice was outscored 26-37.
Tim Stützle is the fastest player here and the only one who beats a defenceman wide as a matter of routine. Claude Giroux at 37 still holds the puck on the half wall until the killing box commits.
The rest of it is size and edge. Ridly Greig hits people who outweigh him and takes 60 penalty minutes doing it. Nick Cousins is among the most disliked players in the league by design. Dennis Gilbert took 50 penalty minutes in 29 games and Kurtis MacDermid is 6-5 and 233 with 391 in his career.
This is a roster built to be unpleasant, and 5:24 of power-play time a night is the number that says it worked.

How they were used
2024-25 · 79 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
