It is among the worst save percentages of his career and it was posted behind two of the weaker defensive clubs in the league. There is no reading of the number that makes it good.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 200 and the style has always been reactive rather than positional. He plays deep, he waits, and he beats shots with his hands rather than by taking away the angle.
At 37 the lateral recovery is the part that has gone; the second chance across the crease is a goal more often than it used to be. The rebound control has never been a strength and it is not one now. He handles the puck adequately and does not start anything with it.
The Mental Game
Fifteen seasons of being the goaltender a club turns to when the plan has not worked, and he has never been visibly rattled by any of it.
He was the number one in Toronto for four seasons, in Florida for two and in San Jose for two, and every one of those clubs eventually decided he was not the answer. He kept getting hired anyway, which is its own kind of evidence.
